#KnowYourGoals Campaign Manual
The #KnowYourGoals campaign, pioneered by the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network – Youth Initiative (SDSN Youth), is a global initiative to empower communities to take ownership of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by inviting local organizers, particularly young people, to raise awareness of the SDGs within local campuses and communities and inspire their peers to take meaningful action.
This document serves as a guide for the organizations participating in the #KnowYourGoals campaign to better organize their events and campaign activities while maximizing their impact and inclusiveness. This guide provides recommendations on the structure and format of the events, branding guidelines, timelines, Q&A and other necessary information.
SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS
In September 2012, world leaders from 193 countries came together to adopt the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The SDGs became the document to guide our social, economic and environmental actions to achieve a sustainable future by 2030. The SDGs became the first development agenda to set goals universally, for both developing and developed economies. As a result, everyone (and especially youth) have an interest in making the SDG agenda a reality.
The world today is faced with many challenges, from poverty and climate change to inequality and humanitarian crises. However, almost two years after the adoption of the SDGs, we have witnessed once-unimaginable milestones including the signing of the Paris Agreement at COP22 in and the New Urban Agenda in Quito. The #KnowYourGoals campaign will allow local organizers and partners to raise awareness of the SDGs and to celebrate success stories which showcase wonderful examples of local solutions that are tackling sustainable development challenges.
#KnowYourGoals invites individuals and organizations worldwide, particularly young people, to organize an event (preferably during September 2017), in an effort to mobilize local support and awareness of the SDGs and tackle 3 important questions:
- What are the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)?
- Why should communities/participants care about them?
- What actions can be taken to localise and implement the Goals?
This campaign represents a unique occasion to remind us that the SDGs are a priority for everyone. We want to give communities, in particular young people, the opportunity to lead the movement that will empower campuses and communities in finding their local solutions to achieve sustainable development and materialize the SDGs by 2030.
Questions for local organizers
WHERE DO I BEGIN?
Begin by enquiring if there are any events scheduled to take place (including forums, festivals, conferences, games or summits) at a local school, university, community centre, council or library during Climate week in September 2017.
CAN I HOST A SESSION FOR #KNOWYOURGOALS AT AN EXISTING EVENT?
Yes! If there is an event taking place between August-December 2017 in your local school, university, community centre or library then you should contact the facilitators to see if you they would be open to the idea of hosting a session on #KnowYourGoals with your assistance. For example:
- If the local school is hosting a workshop on social justice, you could ask the organizers to dedicate a session (60 minutes) to the #KnowYourGoals campaign.
- If your university/college is organizing a homecoming event or a fair for new students you should ask your student association to dedicate a session to the #KnowYourGoals campaign.
- If the local council is organising an event around sustainability, perhaps they may be interested in hosting a session specifically on the SDGs with your assistance.
IF THERE ARE NO EXISTING EVENTS BEING HELD FROM AUGUST – DECEMBER IN MY UNIVERSITY, LOCAL SCHOOL OR COMMUNITY, THEN CAN I ORGANIZE AN EVENT MYSELF?
Yes! But please bear in mind that an event may be easier to facilitate with partner organizations; partners could ensure that the event gets greater coverage in your community, help you secure greater attendance and provide logistical support - such as a venue, projectors, speakers, printing, etc. Begin by approaching your local NGOs, UN country offices, schools, colleges, universities, student associations, municipalities, governmental agencies and asking for their support. You can’t find any interested organizations? Then talk to a friend, colleague or classmate who could be interested to help you brainstorm ideas and assist you in organizing the event. WHAT WOULD BE THE MOST APPROPRIATE DATE FOR THE EVENT?
Ideally the event should be organized during the Climate week in September 2017 and we encourage all our local partners to organize events during that week. However, we understand that organizing an event takes time and a great deal of effort but more importantly some flexibility is needed to ensure success. Therefore the campaign will accept any events from August to December 2017.
WHAT WOULD BE THE IDEAL DURATION OF THE EVENT?
Each event should run for approximately two hours to allow the audience to learn about the SDGs while providing adequate time for them to discuss their application. However some events may run for longer and some for shorter – this is acceptable as long as there is adequate time available to the audience to learn about the SDGs and have the opportunity to contribute to discussions.
WHO SHOULD I INVITE TO THE EVENT?
Participants can be your colleagues and friends, university students, young professionals, general public, local school students, etc. We encourage you to also invite an inspiring keynote speaker in order to inspire the participants. This could be your mayor, university professor, a well-known local activist, a government official, community leader, etc.
WHAT LANGUAGE SHOULD I CONDUCT THE EVENT IN?
It is preferable for the events to be held in the local language to make it easier to for the audience to participate and fully understand the SDG message. However, please note that while we will provide digital resources to our local partners, unfortunately most of that material will be in English. Some of the digital resources may be available in the other languages - such as Spanish, French, Italian, Arabic - but nevertheless this will be limited.
HOW MANY PARTICIPANTS SHOULD I INVITE TO THE EVENT?
Ideally you should invite anywhere between 30 to 200 participants. However, we are quite flexible with this as long as participants can be engaged sufficiently in the discussion. While it is true that bigger events can draw greater attention, they may also not provide opportunity for meaningful discussion with participants. Smaller events are easier to organise, provide more opportunity for participants to contribute to discussions but they also rally a smaller crowd.
CAN YOU GIVE ME FUNDING TO RUN MY EVENT?
Unfortunately we cannot provide funding for the organization of #KnowYourGoals events. However, we will try to support you to the best of our capacity in getting in touch with potential partners from your area, including SDSN networks and SDSN Youth member organizations.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF JOINING THE CAMPAIGN?
First and foremost, you will contribute to raising awareness about why the SDGs are important and how they can be localized to benefit your community whilst advancing sustainable development worldwide. Secondly, you will expand your organization’s audience in your region and have access to a range of potential supporters who might be interested in partnering with you on other initiatives. Third, you will have the possibility of feeding into a global campaign which will showcase your work online to thousands of people from around the world and contribute to make a case for broader youth community involvement in the implementation of the SDGs.
WHAT NAME CAN I USE FOR THE EVENT?
There is no compulsory name for your event. However, you should consider using keywords such as ‘Youth’ and ‘SDGs’, as well as the hashtag ‘#KnowYourGoals’, in order to make the connection with the campaign clearer, facilitate communication on social media and ensure coherence between the different events.
HOW DO I SHARE THE OUTCOME OF MY EVENT?
In order to help us showcase your work and assess the impact of the #KnowYourGoals campaign, you should submit a very brief report (300-500 words) describing the main outcomes of your event, as well as any relevant media materials (including pictures, videos, articles on local newspapers etc.) that you have assembled. However, make sure you also remain active on social media DURING the event, sharing pictures and interesting facts as they come!
WHAT POSTERS AND BRANDING CAN I USE?
SDSN Youth will provide you with a range of materials, including logos, banners and posters that you can then print and use on the day of the event and to publicize the event online.
HOW DO I EXPRESS MY INTEREST IN THE CAMPAIGN?
Social media and branding guidelines
The guidelines include a social media kit package with our #KnowYourGoals communication strategy for Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat and LinkedIn. The guide includes suggested posts, key twitter handles, strategic dates to update your social media accounts, etc.
Once you register your event in the #KnowYourGoals Podio Platform, you will receive our Social Media and Branding guidelines. They will provide you with a clear direction on how to raise the profile of your event, interact with other participants and effectively use the materials in our #KnowYourGoals resource library.
In any post you share online, always use #KnowYourGoals and mention/tag our partners where possible. This will not only allow us to view and share your posts, but it allows participants to easily locate your event.
