Six weeks before world leaders meet in Hamburg for the much-anticipated G20 summit, Think 20 (T20), a network of think tanks from G20 countries, gathered in Berlin to discuss global challenges and provide policy solutions to G20 leaders. This storify captures some of our impressions of the summit.
Fostering Global Cooperation with T20
Even before the official start of the conference the international network of researchers and policy makers gathered in the German capital to deepen international cooperation on global issues. One of these meetings was the official launch of the #T20AfricaStandingGroup.
The event, which was co-hosted by the summit co-chairs German Development Institute / Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE) and the Kiel Institute for the World Economy (IfW) alongside South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA) and the #MGGnetwork, marked the launch of a new research collaboration seeking to strengthen the African engagement with the G20 and vice-versa.
Prior to the launch event T20Germany produced a special policy brief on fostering private investments in infrastructure development in Africa, co-authored by DIE's @JuliaLeininger.
A global gathering in uncertain times
With the disappointing results of last weekend's G7 summit on everybody's mind, many T20 participants did reaffirm their commitment to advancing international solutions to global issues - for example on the issue of climate action.
The cautionary tale from the Jurassic
The official kick-off of the Global Solutions summit was held on Sunday evening at the historic @MfNBerlin. In the shadows of the imposing fossilized dinosaurs, T20Germany's co-chairs @DJSnower and @DirkMessner did find strong words to stress the urgency of the global situation.
In late 2016, the German Development Institute / Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE) and Kiel Institute for the World Economy (IfW) were entrusted by the German Federal Government with organising the T20 process under this year's German presidency of the G20. The Global Solutions summit sought to showcase the concrete and sustainable policy measures developed by the international network of think tanks.+
