SDSN Youth networks from the Asia-Pacific region organised a workshop to bring together youth voices from across the region to the table. Youth from 13 countries worked in groups to create lists of climate action priorities, and together they compile a list of youth priorities that could be brought forward at COP27!
The Asia-Pacific region, arguably the most disaster-prone region in the world, is facing adverse consequences of the climate crisis. The youth of the region are not only the most affected by climate change, but also the most equipped to advocate for climate action. However, climate action has historically minimized youth voices.
SDSN Youth networks from the Asia-Pacific region organised a workshop to bring together youth voices from across the region to the table, and compile a list of youth priorities that could be brought forward at COP27. The workshop saw participation from youth from 13 countries from the region, who worked in groups to create lists of the top six climate action priorities that they believe policymakers of the region must focus on addressing. This statement outlines these priorities that the youth of the region identified as the most important, and will be disseminated amongst COP27 attendees and policymakers.
The most common priorities included:
1. Centralising marginalised voices
2. Climate education
3. Immediate decarbonisation
4. Global North/South equality
Some other priorities included: Water management, Plastic and Waste reduction, Intra-Regional collaboration, and Corporate Regulation.
The networks involved in this initiative are: SDSN Youth AusNZPac, SDSN Youth Hong Kong, SDSN Youth Korea, and SDSN Youth South Asia.
