SDSN Youth celebrates "Bridging Generations" ahead of the Summit of the Future 2024.
On September 13, the Sustainable Development Solutions Network Youth (SDSN Youth) held a dynamic session titled "Bridging Generations: Reflecting on the Summit of the Future," bringing together experienced leaders and emerging youth voices from SDSN and SDSN Youth. This event aimed to promote intergenerational exchange on key topics of the Summit of the Future, such as sustainable development, finance, and the crucial role of youth in shaping our shared future. Through reflective discussions, participants shared insights and expectations, helping to shape the agenda for the Summit and advance the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The panel featured Amanda Abrom (Director of the Global Schools Program), Lucia Rodriguez (Director of the Global Masters in Development Practice and DEIB Officer of SDG Academy), Kareena Shanice Kumar (Project Officer of the Social Entrepreneurship Lab at SDSN Youth), and Bessy Thuranira (Deputy Project Lead of the Local Pathways Fellowship).
The discussions underscored the vital role of education and intergenerational collaboration in achieving sustainable development. Higher education institutions are crucial not just for imparting knowledge but for nurturing the leaders of tomorrow. By preparing students to engage actively in negotiation spaces and understand the intricacies of the SDGs, these institutions empower young people to take on significant roles in their communities and on the global stage.
However, one major barrier to effective collaboration is the lack of trust between generations. Older generations may question the capabilities of younger individuals, while youth often feel their voices are unheard. To address this disconnect, we must prioritize open communication and transparency, creating opportunities for genuine interaction. Events that bring diverse perspectives together—rather than relegating youth to the audience—are essential for breaking down these barriers and fostering a sense of shared purpose.
Engaging youth in decision-making processes is imperative for sustainable development. Young people are often at the forefront of innovative solutions, yet they may lack the platforms to voice their ideas. Communities and institutions must actively seek youth involvement, ensuring their perspectives shape policies and initiatives. Moreover, fostering intergenerational collaboration amplifies these efforts, encouraging young leaders to take proactive steps in creating events that invite community leaders and establish a culture of co-creation.
Addressing systemic inequalities requires a multifaceted approach, starting with dialogue. Raising awareness about the entrenched beliefs that perpetuate inequality is essential for breaking the cycle. By ensuring youth voices are heard at both local and international levels, we can create a more inclusive dialogue that paves the way for actionable change.
The SDGs are interconnected; addressing one goal can impact others. Encouraging youth to focus on specific goals they are passionate about can lead to collaborative efforts that span multiple areas, fostering a holistic approach to sustainable development. Emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, hold immense potential for enhancing public dialogue and accountability. By harnessing these tools, we can create mechanisms that respond to the needs of communities and drive sustainable development forward.
As the discussions wrapped up, it became clear that the Summit of the Future represents a pivotal opportunity for collective action. The panelists reinforced that building trust, investing in education, and fostering collaboration across generations are essential steps toward meaningful change.
