SDSN Youth hosted another session of the Intergenerational Dialogues, focused on the outcomes of COP29.
On November 29, the Sustainable Development Solutions Network Youth (SDSN Youth) held an engaging session at COP29 titled “Voices for Tomorrow: Intergenerational Insights on COP29 Outcomes". This event sought to facilitate an intergenerational dialogue around the crucial outcomes of COP29 and how they can translate into meaningful action for young people worldwide. Discussions focused on sustainable development, climate finance, and the pivotal role of youth in shaping the future of global climate action. Through these reflections, participants shared their insights and expectations, highlighting both the opportunities and challenges youth face as they strive to turn the promises made at COP into tangible, localized solutions.
The session featured insights from speakers Nicolaos Theodossiou (Chair, SDSN Black Sea), Alejandra Gonzales (Youth Advisory Committee, SPA), Salma Ranggita (Network Coordinator, SDSN Youth Indonesia), and Shalom Iboh (Local Pathways Fellow).
Throughout the event, it was clear that young people are not just hopeful for a better future; they are actively shaping it. The discussions underscored the importance of localizing global agreements and translating the high-level negotiations at COP into actionable solutions that address the unique challenges of local communities. From afforestation projects and sustainable agriculture to climate education, youth are already leading initiatives that bridge the gap between policy and practice.
However, while the momentum is growing, there are significant barriers to youth engagement in technical discussions, particularly around climate finance. As the panelists pointed out, climate finance is an area where youth participation remains limited, partly due to the highly technical language and the complex nature of these discussions. The allocation of climate finance is critical to the success of global climate goals, yet many young people struggle to navigate the intricacies of concessional and blended finance. Simplifying the language and providing clearer resources will be key to ensuring that youth can actively engage in these crucial conversations.
Another important theme was the need for tailored solutions that reflect the diversity of regions and communities. Youth participants emphasized that climate solutions should not be one-size-fits-all. Different regions face different challenges, and the deployment of climate finance must be context-specific. The SDSN Youth Local Pathways Fellowship was highlighted as an example of how localized solutions can have a broader, global impact when linked to the larger climate finance agenda.
Despite these challenges, the event was filled with optimism. Young people are ready to step up and take on leadership roles, and they have a clear vision of the kind of world they want to build. However, as Shalom Davis pointed out, the knowledge gap remains a significant hurdle. The complex language of COP negotiations often makes it difficult for young people to fully participate. Organizations like SDSN Youth are addressing this gap by providing resources that break down complex climate topics, making them more accessible to the next generation of leaders.
Looking ahead to COP30 in Brazil, the event served as a reminder that youth are not just the leaders of tomorrow—they are the leaders of today. Their involvement is crucial in turning the promises of COP29 into real action. By continuing to create spaces for youth engagement, simplifying complex discussions, and fostering global collaboration, we can ensure that the commitments made at COP29 do not remain empty promises but instead lead to meaningful, lasting change.
As we reflect on the outcomes of COP29, it is clear that youth leadership in climate action is essential. The conversation at SDSN Youth’s event was just one of many steps toward building a more sustainable, inclusive, and equitable future. By continuing to engage, innovate, and collaborate, we can ensure that the road to COP30—and beyond—leads to a world where climate action is not just a lofty goal but a reality for all.
